Showgirls & Slayers of Harrods Swarovski Christmas Windows

This weekend while shopping for holiday gifts at Harrods, I got good look at their window display sponsored by Swarovski.

Though the name "Crystal Christmas" might bring shining bright icicles to mind, what Swarovski presents is a much darker interpretation- where the shine might just be coming from the edge of a knife.

From glittering gothic showgirls exhibited in a Ziegfeld Follies-esque tiered cake of mirrors,

to beautifully haunting scenes out of a murder-mystery.

Bejeweled birdcage songbirds appear from behind a sheer white veil,

as a python dominatrix rules the wintry forest floor.

These beautiful windows certainly stand out on the Knightsbridge storefront, seem to be themed more "The Nightmare Before..." than Holly-Jolly Christmas. In fact every child passing in front of the windows exclaimed "That woman is dead!" and "Is she killing him?! Why is she killing him!"

So fashion slaves should flock to Swarovski's wintry windows, but those looking for more of a traditional Christmas with a jolly man dressed in all white should stick to the holiday decorations of Harrods' interior.

Harrods Crystal Christmas Decorations

This weekend's chilly grey weather got me thinking it was the Christmas season.
With only 7 weeks left until the day and 5 more weeks until our holiday vacation, it nearly is!

Yesterday we took a tour around London to see the best Christmas displays. Normally Fortnum & Mason is our favorite, but Harrods really impressed this year.

Every year the store picks a different theme for the decorations and window displays. This year was Crystal Christmas as the windows, which deserve a post of their own, were presented by Swarovski.

Don't worry, there are plenty of traditional decorations peppered throughout the Christmas shop.

With no Thanksgiving to look forward to here, I find myself getting excited about Christmas extra early. Are you excited for the holiday season yet?

Oregon Trail to Kings Road with River Island's Chelsea Girl

I got sucked into the gold rush playing the vintage computer game Oregon trail last night. Did you know you can play a whole load of old Apple games online?

Anyhow, it was the FIRST time I ever made it to Oregon alive! I even got in the top 10 of the game leaderboard. 1991 is so proud of me.

I was re-living the trans-prairie victory today while online shopping and came across River Island's Chelsea Girl collection that could fit right into 1848.

Clockwise from top left:
  1. Hedgehog print jumper
  2. Cream victoriana blouse
  3. Frill front blouse
  4. Oversize cape
  5. Ankle boots
  6. Midi skirts
  7. Suede bag

It is based on the Chelsea Girl brand of the 60s and 70s which eventually evolved into the River Island of today.

During the 60s and 70s the King's Road in Chelsea was the center of London counterculture. Hippies roamed the street in the late 1960s, while in the 70s Dame Vivienne Westwood opened her first shop on the King's Road selling to the punk scene.

The collection might have some pieces that are "fording the Snake River" than River Island, but it does blend together nicely the 1960s Kings Road with 1860s Oregon Trail for the modern day Chelsea girl.

Are you into frontier/ hippie style or should it get lost on the trail like one of my oxen?

Try to beat my 2244 score on Oregon Trail here and to get a good idea of the Kings Road style of the 1960s check out the Kings Road Rocks! tumblr by @kingsroadrocks.

Timeline of a Birthday Weekend in London

FRIDAY NIGHT-
Glam Factory at the National Portrait Gallery with friends followed by dinner at a Portuguese cafe Canela. Then off to Victoria for some beers with more friends.

Cakes and Carbs at Canela
SATURDAY-
Veg around at home watching the Importance of Being Earnest. Inspired, decide to ditch the plans for Italian to eat at Oscar Wilde's former haunt, Kettners.

Kettners, a British institution

Barely make the reservation, but still have enough time to soak in the historic ambiance. Indulge in some cheesecake while pretending Oscar is sipping some absinthe in the corner and Bing Crosby is crooning at the bar.

After dinner surprise with Priscilla Queen of the Desert tickets. Hilarious and almost as much fun as a real drag show in the beautiful (but way too hot- I think I went through menopause in the second act) Palace Theatre.

Remember going out to clubs all night for birthdays? This time wander the streets of Leicester Square to get Honeydew Bubble Tea and Passion Fruit popping boba from Bubbleology.

SUNDAY-
Wake up to a delicious birthday treat of Pumpkin Whoopie Pies from Hummingbird Bakery (from my Birthday list).

After opening presents, take a ridiculous bus journey (curse you TFL!) to see the first Renegade Craft Fair in the UK in Brick Lane.

Check out all the cute hip craft stands and find this gem:

Viva Las Vegas by Patrick Edgely

A print by Patrick Edgely with Viva Las Vegas on it. For people who got married in the Viva Las Vegas wedding chapel? YES, PLEASE!

Shopping for crafts can make you hungry. Conveniently the Sunday Up Market on Brick Lane is downstairs, so pick up some dumplings.

Maybe the vintage start to the weekend is to blame, but the urge to get 'Chips' served in newsprint from a retro Fish & Chip shop strikes, so its good Poppies is on the way back from Brick Lane.

SUNDAY NIGHT-
Return home to west London exhausted. Cancel the plans for dinner and drinks in Fulham in favor of Mexican delivery from Tacuba and the Red Riding Hood dvd.

While Amanda Seyfried may disappoint, pulled pork nachos never do and it is the perfect way to unwind after a great weekend.

Hope you had a good weekend too!

Bizarro World of Chanel at Harrods

With some time to kill on Tuesday before meeting up at Drink, Shop & Do, I decided to see the Chanel installations at Harrods, "Une Promenade".

Though I was sad they took away the antiques shop for this event area, I was excited to see this much space devoted entirely to Chanel. I remember quite clearly my grandmother taking me into Chanel when I was 9 and it forever became the epitome of style for me.

Walking into Une Promenade, we were greeted and moved through a beaded curtain of oversized pearls to step into a Wonderland-esque all white french garden in a circular room, featuring a Karl Lagerfield designed gold Camilla tree, where I found out quite quickly there were no photos allowed. The ultra calm, wintry-feeling room had Chanel wellies and quilted black leather handled gardening tools.
Don't I wish this was my 2.55 bag!
It's actually a vintage knockoff produced by Bloomingdale's

Someone must have slipped me a vial of "Drink This to Make you Smaller" potion because the next room to the left had me walking into the inside of a classic black 2.55 shoulder bag, completely leather quilted with an over-sized zipper pocket wall. Featuring videos of how the bags are made, I found this room very fascinating to see all the craft work that goes into each individual bag.

Through to the next room, which was a little (or big) girls dream of Chanel-clothed bears coming out of an advent calendar and a Chanel dollhouse.

My favorite part is the "Haute couture" room, featuring some Chanel couture dresses and the gigantic boxes in which the dresses are delivered to the lucky few able to afford to wear such beautiful pieces of art.

There were truly throwaway rooms: the No.5 with huge bottles and an endless reel of the current commercial and the tweed room, with wall panels of Chanel tweed. Nothing really exciting in these.

The library featured some nice furniture and a voice over from Mr. Lagerfeld, but my favorite part was the larger-than-life Karl light. Can I have one, please?

I was a bit disappointed the walls in here were covered in wallpaper and not real books, as to make it easier to pretend I was in Karl's actual library.

The final room before the exit was the giant jacket and 2.55 bag covered in pins (badges), placed inexplicably in a poker theme. Knowing that it is supposed to be an homage, it still comes out a bit on the tacky side.

Overall, I found the installation entertaining, but found some parts, especially the last room to not fit in with Chanel's ideal of:
"luxury lies not in richness and ornateness but in the absence of vulgarity. Vulgarity is the ugliest word in our language. I stay in the game to fight it."
However, I do feel I want to see this again before it closes the week of 26 September to fully soak in everything and see the gorgeous Haute Couture room again.

Have you seen the Chanel installation at Harrods? What do you think?

Drank, Shopped, and Did @ Drink, Shop & Do

With holidays, work and family obligations, life can get pretty hectic in these parts. A month went by before I could get together with some girlfriends, so on Tuesday we met up for some much needed friend time at King's Cross' Drink, Shop & Do.

Situated just near Kings Cross station, it is the perfect place to meet up with my commuter friends before they traveled back to the home counties for the evening. I have been trying to make it to this shop for more than a year now, so glad we finally made an excuse to go!

A vintage boutique, a craft shop, a restaurant, a tea room, and a school are just some of the services they offer. Normally, an idea like this would come out like a mess, but the ladies of D, S & D, put it all together with charm and style to create the perfect ladies night out atmosphere.

We sat in the Dome room in the back of the café, which can be rented out for private parties, and ordered a bottle of wine. I ordered a Lemon Drizzle, a delicious little lemon bar.

Everything, and I mean everything, in the restaurant and shop is for sale, from the vintage table & chairs we sat on to the plates we were eating off. I am wishing I had a bit more space in my flat to accommodate for some of the lovely mid-century chairs sitting in their café.

The DO part of Drink, Shop & Do comes in on their daily rotating list of activities: Scrabble Tuesdays, tutorials on pin-up hairstyles- to lectures on fashion illustration.

Tuesday nights are Knitting group nights, and you can reserve a space at the beginners table where they will teach you the basic knitting techniques. Their store offers all you would need to start your knitting adventure here.

Our Drink, Shop & Do experience was a success and we are definitely headed back here soon. I am thinking for their Dolly Parton- listining, clay-molding night!
